March 19 – Visiting The London Ambulance Service 111 Control Room

On March 19, 2020 The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited The London Ambulance Service 111 Control Room.

As I write this millions all over the world are in self-isolation because of the Coronavirus or COVID-19. According to the World Health Organization this is a newly discovered virus that causes respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties and sadly as we are seeing in worse case scenarios all over the world pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death.

Because of this rapidly spreading disease and the fear and panic it is currently causing, our first responders are being overwhelmed with the amount of people who need help and are seeking information.

Today, it was revealed that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited The London Ambulance Service 111 Control Room in Croydon to meet staff who have been taking NHS 111 calls from the public, and thank them for the vital work they are doing. During the visit, Their Royal Highnesses spoke to staff members and the Chief Executive of the London Ambulance Service, Garrett Emmerson, about how they are dealing with the increase in demand on the NHS 111 service.

They also heard about when members of the public can help alleviate pressure on the system by using advice available online at nhs.uk/coronavirus before contacting 111.

After the visit, The Duke released a statement saying in part: “Catherine and I were proud to visit staff working at NHS 111, to pass on our personal thanks, along with those of my grandmother and father, to staff working around the clock to provide care and advice to those that need it most.”

Catherine has attended the awards regularly since 2017 with Prince William who has been President of the Academy since 2010.

There was a lot of anticipation this year to see what the Duchess would wear as the BAFTA’s dress code was focused on sustainability. Catherine repeated her bespoke Alexander McQueen gown first seen in Malaysia during the Diamond Jubilee Tour in 2012 which took The Duke and Duchess to Southeast Asia. You can view photos of the gown here.

At the awards Their Royal Highnesses walked the red carpet and in his role as President, The Duke awarded The Fellowship Award to film producer Kathleen Kennedy in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television. Her recent work includes producing Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

January 27 – UK Holocaust Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony

On January 27, 2020 The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the UK Holocaust Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony at Central Hall in Westminster.

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place each year on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Holocaust. It is a day to remember the victims and the survivors of the Holocaust, Nazi persecution, and the genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

To commemorate the anniversary, The Duchess of Cambridge took portraits of two Holocaust survivors Steven Frank and Yvonne Bernstein with their grandchildren. The project is a collaboration between the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, Jewish News and the Royal Photographic Society, for which Catherine became Patron of in 2019.

The portraits will be part of a new exhibition which will open later this year, bringing together 75 powerful images of survivors and their family members to mark 75 years since the end of the Holocaust.

The Royal Photographic Society says, the project “aims to honour the victims of the Holocaust and to celebrate the full lives that survivors have built in the UK. Each of the portraits depicts the special connection between a survivor and younger generations of their family, who over the coming years will carry the legacy of their grandparents. However, the project also aims to inspire people across the UK to consider their own responsibility to remember and share the stories of those who endured persecution at the hands of the Nazis.”

During the ceremony, Prince William gave a reading of a letter written about his great-grandmother Princess Alice, who helped to hide her Jewish friends, the Cohens, in her home. He and The Duchess also took part in lighting candles in commemorate the six million Jews who lost their lives. After the ceremony The Duke and Duchess met with survivors and their families, including Yvonne Bernstein, who she had photographed.

In her first stop The Duchess of Cambridge visited Ely and Careau Children’s Centre where she joined a baby sensory class to hear about the support that parents receive and she also talked to about the ‘5 Big Questions’ survey. During a conversation The Duchess opened up about feeling isolated in Anglesey after the birth of Prince George.

She said: “It’s nice to be back in Wales. I was chatting to some of the mums. It was the first year and I’d just had George – William was still working with search and rescue and we came up here and I had a tiny, tiny baby in the middle of Anglesey. It was so isolated, so cut off. I didn’t have any family around, and he was doing night shifts. If only I had had a center like this.”

In Surrey, The Duchess of Cambridge returned to HMP Send Women’s Prison for the first time since 2015. There she met with some of the women she met in 2015, who have since been successfully rehabilitated, released and are rebuilding their families. January 21 – Launching Landmark UK-Wide Survey On Early Childhood

On January 21, 2020 The Duchess of Cambridge launched 5 Big Questions, a landmark survey which gives people across the UK an opportunity to provide their view on raising the next generation.

In March 2018, The Duchess of Cambridge announced during a symposium at the Royal Society for Medicine that she had convened a steering group to look at what can be done to make a positive difference to the lives of children, by focusing on their earliest stage of life, from pre-birth to 5 years of age. The steering group’s recommendations, on behalf of The Duchess, formed the basis of The Royal Foundation’s strategy for developing her work in this area.

The fruit of this steering group is 5 Big Questions, a landmark survey which gives people across the UK an opportunity to provide their view on raising the next generation. The ‘5 Big Questions’ online poll is being conducted by Ipsos Mori on behalf of The Royal Foundation and “aims to spark the biggest ever conversation on early childhood”. The results of the survey will be made available in March and will determine the next steps in Catherine’s early years work.

To kick off the initiative The Duchess visited MiniBrum at Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum where she met with health professionals, parents, a group of children and supporters.

The Duchess will then continue promotion of her online poll by going on a 24 hour tour, making stops in London, Cardiff and Surrey.

And when deciding where best to propose to Catherine, I could think of no more fitting place than Kenya to get down on one knee. Throughout my life, I have been lucky enough to spend time in many other parts of Africa. I’m also honoured to be the Patron of the Royal African Society. And as Catherine and I have said to several of you here tonight, we hope to have the chance to visit many more countries in the future and share our mutual love of your continent with our children.”

January 15 – The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Visit Bradford

On January 15, 2020 The Duke and Duchess visited Bradford, one of the UK’s most diverse cities — to visit projects which support and promote community cohesion.

The Duke and Duchess started their day at the City Hall in Centenary Square where they joined a group of young people from across the community to hear about life in Bradford. They also met with representatives from local employers and businesses who are helping young people into employment. Afterwards, William and Catherine greeted excited locals.

Their next stop was to My Lahore, a British Asian restaurant chain which takes inspiration from Lahore, known as the Food Capital of Pakistan. There, The Duke and Duchess were greeted by CEO Asghar Ali and managing director Shakoor Ahmed before heading inside the kitchen to meet with students from Bradford College who are on a kitchen apprenticeship scheme. They then tried their hand at making Kulfi milkshakes, before sitting down to meet representatives from the UK Women’s Muslim Council and those who have benefited from the Council’s Curry Circle, an initiative that provides a hot two-course meal for people who are homeless or struggling to feed themselves.

William and Catherine then visited one of Bradford’s Khidmat Centres, whose main focus is to help the most vulnerable members of the community from minority ethnic backgrounds. They heard about the activities and workshops offered at the centre, and the organisations that they support and joined a session involving groups supported by Better Start Bradford, which delivers over 20 projects to pregnant women and families with children under the age of 4. From there they joined a Better Start Little Dots workshop, which uses music and play to support children’s social, emotional and physical development, while simultaneously supporting adult self esteem. They also joined a workshop with Near Neighbours, an organization that brings together people from religiously and ethnically diverse communities across the UK to get to know each other better.
